3 Ways Technology is Changing the Way We Travel

Technology is a huge part of our everyday lives. It’s also become a huge part in changing the way we travel, especially in recent years, and not just for the Western world either. For example, 87% of people in India book their entire trip through their phones.

In light of how the travel industry is changing, I’ve rounded up the top three ways tech is contributing to this.

    Social media

Social media is like your own digital travel brochure, available at your fingertips. Hashtag and location searches give us instant access to different destinations around the world and enable us to search through multiple means of accommodation, too.

Although there’s a valid argument that social media isn’t always the best representation of real life, it’s the closest we get to wanderlust through someone else’s travels. It inspires us to explore new places and gives us ideas for our own bucket list.

It also enables us to connect with travel companies, too, changing the way we book travel. Using Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, we can instantly connect with airlines and booking sites, and not only that, but some places also offer bookings through Facebook Messenger, too.

    Online booking

Online sites, such as Airbnb, are on the up and show no signs of stopping.

Technology not only enables us to easily book online (and in a matter of minutes, might I add), it also opens new doors to more affordable and way more authentic accommodation. Instead of traditional hotels, the likes of Airbnb mean we can book the most rustic refurbished cave in the heart of the Italian countryside, or a penthouse apartment in New York, for a fraction of the price of what we used to pay.

Online booking also paves the way for more affordable airfares. Using comparison sites, such as Skyscanner, means we can find the cheapest flights in moments.

    Making us more cultural

Technology helps make us more cultural when travelling. Being able to ditch the old-fashioned (or would that be hipster now?) paper map, and use Google Maps means we’re faster and more efficient when it comes to travel, and can fit more in.

It also means we’re less likely to spend time getting lost and more time visiting that historic museum you’ve always wanted to go to.

We can use tech to break down language barriers using translation tools, as well as seeking out the best places to go, and things to see. In a nutshell, it has given us the opportunity to embrace a more cultural way of travelling and helps create a more unique, personal experience when we land on new soil. How many of us have used sites such as Lonely Planet, or even a funny Buzzfeed article to see the best places to go when in a new country or city.
