Lets go lyrical for liner!

Today I am all about eyeliner, we have 4 different products we can line our eyes with, namely, the good old pencil eyeliner we are all familiar with, the tricky liquid liner and the new craze, gel liner, then there is the good old method of using eye-shadow.

The History of eyeliner

Eyeliner was first used in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia as a dark black line around the eyes. As early as 10,000 BC, Egyptians wore various cosmetics not only for aesthetics but to protect the skin from the desert sun. Research has also speculated that eyeliner was worn to protect the wearer from the evil eye. The characteristic of having heavily lined eyes has been frequently depicted in Egyptian art. They produced eyeliner with a variety of materials including lead, copper ore and antimony.

In the 1920s, Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered, introducing the use of eyeliner to the Western world. The 1920s were an era commonly associated with many changes in women’s fashion, and women felt freer to apply makeup more liberally.

So first up is the Pencil Eyeliner
The pencil eyeliner is the most commonly used of all the eyeliners, it is easy to apply.  You need to keep it sharp by using an eyeliner sharpener to make sure that you are able to draw a crisp line on your waterline.

Next we have Liquid Eyeliner
This is the hardest eyeliner to master.  You need a really steady hand to apply, I have tried and failed many times, ending up with a very skew line and burning eyes. So this is still one I need to try and try again.

My favourite is the Gel Eyeliner
This comes in a pot with a little brush, until recently gel liner was mostly used by makeup artists but is now more commonly used.  You can create a very dramatic look with this eyeliner.  I find it easier to apply when I am wearing my contact lenses, so I keep it for the days I am wearing my lenses.

Maybelline Gel Eyeliner

Lastly we have the method of using Eye-shadow as Eyeliner
Remember not to use this method on your waterline but below your waterline as the shadow will irritate your eyes. To apply use a angled makeup brush, dip into the shadow and line your eyes.
